Lucia Joy Fernandez (b. 1979) is a Spanish-American artist based in the Pacific Northwest. Raised by Cuban refugees - an artist and a technologist - a passion for science, storytelling, and immersing herself in nature was formed. Lucia has lived, worked, and studied in many places throughout her life, all greatly influencing her way of seeing and understanding the world through the lens of art and design. With a background in architecture, her practice is grounded in a process of curating work that speaks to the many layers of experience that exist within us.

The work I develop is a response to my connection with the invisible thread moving through all things – the creative lifeforce.
From the earliest of memories, the natural world and music gave me the most direct experience of this thread. Architecture taught me how to translate the inspiration I felt into environments designed to bring a greater sense of awareness of ourselves, and each other, within the world around us – through the use of light, materiality, and space. Meditation and Reiki training provided tools for a more in-depth understanding of how to work with energy as an everyday way of being.
These essential aspects of my journey inform my perception and shape the ‘why’ behind the work created within my practice –– to explore the tension in the space between the depths of Soul and the heights of Spirit. I seek out the greater story unfolding beyond the surface of things, to celebrate the essence of being alive in an intentional process of restraint and revealing. Through painting, drawing, building, I balance precision with abstraction, clarity and ambiguity, darkness and light, stillness and movement, in an effort to draw out underlying meaning.
